Cycles is indeed awesome, actually I started learning 3D seriously when it got integrated into Blender. And yes you should learn Cycles as soon as possible, don't wanna miss the good stuff

Node editor isn't that difficult. I was so afraid the first time I saw it too but after a few tries and a few more tutorials I have a not-so-bad grasp of it. Give it a try and you should be impressed by how much more you can achieve.
